On several pod casts and the inter-webs there are some 40K players/internet famous guys espousing 'the biggest arms in 40k"

Personally, I would never make a claim like that myself.

That being said the little hairs on my tiny forearms go up when I hear it.

Who really has the biggest arms in 40K...which should really be phrased as "Who has the largest muscular arms in 40K?"

I think before the title is awarded a contest should be held to validate these perfidious claims. :) :)
I just had to rearrange my work shop again

It has been a busy bit of work lately, but I am committed to see a truly productive year of painting.

Somewhere in the last few months I have mutated from a player/some times painter to a painter/never player. So really feeling the itch to get some games in. But it is weird the thought of taking all my finished models out of the display case has become slightly uncomfortable...lol...expect that to pass. But such a switch for me.

Anyways onto some pics and updates.

First up, I quite like my 'On Deck' area (s). I thought at one time seeing all the models out at once would daunt me and I would cease to try to paint them...but, it is just the opposite. It has built a desire to get them done and in a case. Each day I find myself "oooh, I want to paint that next." So I get a surge of motivation to get going.

I did find that I really needed more organization, so I went through the host of models and separated them into an "Ork group" an "Imperial group" and a "Chaos group." This met some deep seated need in myself and I felt much better once it was done.

All told this is about 750 models, not counting the boxes on top shelf, so should keep me busy for years actually.

Next is an update on the Sons of Medusa Techmarine on a bike for my Pathfinders. I am trying "easy NMM" that I found on line somewhere...will give recipe when all done.

Here is my April commitment for 1HouraNight painting challenge. Just felt the urge to get some Nurgle on with the mutilators. I need the attack bikes done to continue my Pathfinders and be able to run some of the detachments in the new WS book.

Lastly a Weightlifting update;

Still hovering around 265lbs, but feel 'tighter' and so feel breaking 260 is right around the corner. I have finally settled on a long term work out plan that incorporates medium reps for hypertrophy and lower reps for power that I like and my old body can tolerate.

I may or may not compete in power lifting again. I certainly will not until I crack 250lbs in body weight and also out lift all my previous bests. This honestly may never happen. As a competitive guy it is tough going up against guys who use Performance Enhancing Drugs when I chose not to. This does not detract from my motivation to lift...I love to lift...that is why I do it. Competition is another thing though.

On a good note, while I may struggle to beat my previous max lifts, I know I will lose a few pounds as my company goes all in for Wounded Veterans and participates in a 9k charity event run/walk every July in Boston, MA. I have a certain expectation to participate in my current position, and would not miss the opportunity for this great cause. A side benefit is trip to Boston for the weekend...so likely will turn this into a vacation for me and the wife.

9K is about 5.6 miles. So training for that over the spring and summer will carve a few fat pounds off me. Currently I get in about 5.2 miles in 60 minutes. I move like a wounded Clydesdale....but I keep moving. Not too many runners after a 5 mile run can do 20 pull ups and bench 250lbs for 20 reps at 265lbs....a small, frivolous, ego consolation...but I will take it!

Sample of recent work out: Currently in "Group 1" of 8 week plan.

Dead Lift 385 for 4x8 (100 sec resc)
6 Sets of single leg lying leg curls (30 second rest)
10 min walk
6 Sets of 12 Pull Ups with 6 different hand spacing (100 sec rest)
4 Sets of seated single arm lat pulls (12-15 reps each, 30 sec rest)
4 Sets of seated single army lat pull downs (12 reps each, 30 sec rest)
4 Sets of heavy shrugs (3 sec rest)

Thanks for the read,
Continuing to work on the One Hour a Night Painting Challenge for March I completed another 6 Nurgling bases and a Nurgle Herald.

These came out a bit better than the first 3 Nurgling bases and I enjoyed getting these done. Work slowed me a bit, but got it done.

That puts me up 46/0 on my Purchase to Paint ratio for 2016 and 53/165 for my yearly personal goal.
Took some time today to add chapter markings and some tribal symbols to my Desert Talons, which are an off shoot of my Pathfinder Space Marines. These guys have been done, minus the iconography for some time and feels good to get them done.

I won't add them to my Paint to Purchase ratio, but I am adding them to my painting point system and models 'Done' for this year as I have been holding off on them until I decided on what symbols to use and getting them done.

I took some left over 3rd edition metal Chaos Hounds and re-painted them into 3 Space Wolves Cyber Wolves.

Used metallic colors for the bone and highlighted with turquoise ink. Wanted a cold over-all look to them.

Provided the before pic for reference. I did this quick and just painted over the existing paint.

I also did some work on the base for my Salamander LSS.

This brings the 2016 Paint to Purchase Ratio to 39/0 and for my goal of 165 models painted this year I am up to 39.

Thanks for the read,

Finished 10 Pink Horrors and 6 Gretchen.

This brings my Paint to Purchase ratio for 2016 to 33/0.

I was worried the DeathWatch game would set be back...but 2015 Tax Bill solved that dilemma for my as I can not spend the money free of guild until that responsibility is resolved. Guessssss....that is a good thing :(

These two batches were repaints or finishing something that has sit on a shelf partially done for over a year...probably like 5+ for the Gretchen

Felt good to knock them out.

Thanks for the read!

Feb Painting challenge crashed and burned and I did not complete the Salamander Land Speeder Storm for my Pathfinders.

You can see the partially done model in the back ground of the pic.

I will carry on!!!

March 2016 I have declared the month of "The Clean Up" and the challenge resolves around getting a host of partially finished models done and off the 'On Deck' shelf and into the display case.

That list includes:

Finish Salamander LSS and base (which is like 4 models really)

10 Pink Horrors, based and washed so far

6 Gretchin, about 3/4 done

1 Ork Psyker, about 1/3 done

1 Medusan Tech Marine on Bike, about 1/2 done

3 Chaos hounds to be repainted as Fenrisian Wolves

4-6 Sons of Jaghatai, about 1/2 done

1 Salamander Stern guard, primed and partially based

5 Desert Talon Pathfinders need squad markers

1 LSS for said Desert Talon Pathfinders needs markings

4 Desert Talon Scouts from near scratch

9 Nurglings, based and washed

1 Nurgle Herald based and washed

A tall order but feeling the mojo currently...and I really need to boost my purchase to paint ratio...as I know I will be picking up the Death Watch box set that has like 50 models in it.

Weight Lifting (WL)

Yesterday was heavy dead lift and run.

I worked up to a heave single of 475lbs that felt hard, but confident. Felt good as I have not lifted that heavy in training for over a year and very geeked that this spring will see me finally dead lifting in the 5 plate+ clubs in training. This has been a long road.

Worked up to a quick 330lb close grip bench to work out some soreness

Finished with 2.5 miles in 30 minutes for cardio...and shoveled beautiful MI snow for 30 minutes before AND after my work out for extra cardio!

Body weight was 263lb on the nose today.

Still practicing with the home made light box. Changed the set up a bit to let more light in and that helped quite a bit.

This a LSS for my Pathfinders, from the Desert Talon Tribe that I recently decided on the Tribal symbols for.

I plan to finish up the 10 man squad this month and get the symbols added.

This pic is closer to what I am after..as this is very close to my naked eye and a much better pic than what I have gotten in the past...so working on it!

Weight Lifting:

2.28.16 was Upper Body, Over load day

Kept it simple but heavy:
Started with Flat Bench 235 x 10, 275 x 10, 295 x 8, 315 x5 ( in lbs)
Followed with some partials with 405, 425, and 455lbs
Finished with some Pause reps with 315

In between sets I completed 7 sets of 10 on various grip pull ups and 5 sets of Yates Rows with 225lb for 10 reps each.

Good and spent by the end and got to play with some big boy weights. Felt good.

Did an internet search on home made light boxes and you can see what I came up with. Also took a few dozen pics to see how to get the best results, still not satisfied...but coming along.

Ended up running 4.95 miles in my allotted hour on the tread mill

Always finish with a strength test after a good run and hit 235lb bench for 18...I figure if I can get 20, I should have run harder.
So have been working on meeting my February Commitment. Was a bit stymied between work and figuring out how I wanted to proceed with some Salamander Pathfinder tribesman.

I finally caught a bit a break, such that any really exists, from work and found some inspiration.

Here are a couple WIP's for the crew of a LSS.

On the lifting front:

Current body weight is steady between 260-265lbs, feels like I might see high 250's in March

Some strength returning as I push to get back to the same strength level at 20lbs lighter. Hit an smooth 325lb close grip bench press this week, logged 13 miles in running, and up to a clean 20 pull ups. Also hit a confident 454lb dead lift. So feeling stronger a very little bit at a time. At my age just happy to be able to function in the gym and get any hobby done at all.

Thanks for the read,
Did some work on my Dester Hawk Tribe of the Pathfinder Space Marines.

First guy in the squad to get squad markings. So will go back and do that soon.

But glad to finish this guy up as he has been on shelf for a bit.
As I wrote about earlier, I picked a painting challenge to participate in for the year.

It took some time to find one that was flexible enough to keep me interested.

The one that worked for me turned out to be on the FaceBook group page of 1 Hour A Night

Found HERE

The first challenge was two bikers and two scouts.

Just finished them today, adding a Silver Skull, a Red Talon, and a Dark Son to my Pathfinders.

Additionally, I did a scout from each chapter as well.

Group shot at the bottom of this post.
Another noble hero is recovered wounded and cut off from his chapter.

Brother Krintas, Silver Skulls

Brother Krintas has been reunited with his Chapter the honorable Silver Skulls. A second founding descendant of the Ultra-Marines.

Before returning to duty on Varsavia, Krintas will sequester with the Pathfinder space marines for a period of time.

He has been outfitted with a new steed.

Having recently read Silver Skulls: Portents I felt inclined to paint at least on Silver Skull up.

The paint scheme is very simple and enjoyable to paint. The background of the chapter is very good as well.

Thanks for the read,
These guys have been on my 'to paint' list for months on end and have remained in a semi-complete status for almost as long.

Feels good to get them done.

Also still working on getting decent photos with my iPAD2.

Just behind them you can make out what guys are up next.

First will be a Silver Skulls Space Marine and Silver Skulls Scout.

Thanks for the read,
Good Day

I have decided to join in the fun with at least one 2016 painting challenge.

I will post the links once I have finally chosen and gotten things situated.

I am experimenting with taking photos from my iPad2 which may or may not be better than my dated digital camera.

I have added a 4ft LED overhead light to my work space to assist my vision while painting.

I need to continue to organize my paints and tools and likely will invest or build some paint racks.

I spent some time reorganizing my "To Paint" shelves. As you can see it is quite enough to keep me busy for some time.

I have also determined even it a paint challenge has some form of requirements for what/how much to paint i need to live with possibly not meeting that month's challenge and so on. As I am really only successful at regular painting productivity when I paint whatever the hell I want when I want.

From the pic you can probably make out some general idea of what is on deck. A host of marines from different codex's. Space Marines, White Scares, Dark Angels, Space Wolves the works...some Inquisition and Grey Knights as well. Then a host of Chaos and Deamons, followed by hordes of Orks...good stuff!

Thanks for the read more to follow,

Brother Krintas of the rarely seen Dark Sons Space Marine chapter.

I admit I knocked him out at a quicker pace than usual and some degree of quality was the price for the speed.

However after setting up my painting projects for the year (or decade) previously this week I realized I must increase the speed a tad in order to make any dent at all in my unpainted model collection.
Going through all my figs and separating out the painted ones left me with a question.

How many unpainted primed models do I have? MMMMmmmmm. Maybe I shouuld put them out and line them up for being painted this year....and a couple hours later.......

Should be set for the next 15 years on ready to paint models. Probably should not buy another model for at least a decade....riiigght.

This was another lost battle brother I added to my Pathfinder Space Marines.

Brother Ngorn of the Mortifactors.

Ngorn was thought lost in battle during the Thrakean campaign.

The Thrakean campaign was fought primarily in the hive city of Thrakea IV. While clearing an assigned area of the city of cultists Ngorn's squad was struck by a direct ordnance hit, collapsing a large building.

Ngorn remains uncertain if any other squad members survived. The destructive blast and ensuing collapse of the building on Ngorn's squad forced a structural weakness in the main floor of the building they patrolled.. Ngorn awoke separated from his squad deep in the Thrakea IV sewer system.

Such was the expanse of the ancient sewer system and apparent distance the collapse and current of effluent had transported Ngorn while unconscious that he lost contact with his squad.

Ngorn reports extricating himself from the sewer system took over 6 months and saw him fight his way by hand through hordes of mutants and cultists.

His path took him by chance or fate to the seat of corruption on the hive world where he overcame the cultist overseer, a Slaanesh Chaos Marine named Slitherton, by the slimmest of margins.

Ngorn has decided to remain in service to the Pathfinders until his ancestors speak to him of a new purpose. This appears to be a facet of the this unique chapter's close link with it's chosen dead and is not fully understood by the Imperium.

What is understood by all is that Ngorn is stalwart and relentless in his pursuit of the great enemy. Ngorn also demonstrates an almost preternatural knowledge of where a foe will strike next giving him a great advantage in battle.

I enjoyed painting this guy after finding some really good blogs and work done by others. I intend to do a few more Mortifactors or even some vehicles in this scheme.

Thanks for the read,
Bran Clear Eye, Way Finder of the Pathfinder Space Marines.

Bran is the current Chapter Master and carries the Pathfinder gene-seed.

The Pathfinders are well supported by Terra and often ally with the Inquisition, other Space Marine Chapters, the DeathWatch, and various other Imperial forces as the situation requires.

The Way Finder holds that duty sacred and carries the burden that comes with it.

For to save one brother, may mean the death of another.
It is a combination of American Indian and Nordic symbols for a Hawk and the All Seeing Eye/Wise Man.

Each returned brother will carry this symbol somewhere on his armor and may also carry his original chapter symbol.

Pathfinder's carry this and other symbols depicting their position. rank, battle honors, and squad designations. Bran is equipped with WayBreaker an ancient relic powerfist, Shield of Storm, Artificier armour, and as mentioned his iron steed Storm Strider.
At times fluff follows function.

After much, much consternation with finding my 'grove' with painting, I discovered that I enjoy researching a seldom seen chapter, looking at others' work and then trying my hand at completing a fig or two in a particular paint scheme. Then moving on, maybe returning to that scheme, maybe not.

This has worked for me and I have many models completed over the last few months. Well, many for me. I still paint by brush, so can not crank out whole armies in 30 days or anything.

Having accepted this is how I like to paint, I began mulling over how I can tie these guys together....and so the Pathfinder Space Marines were born.

There mission is a simple but very important one. One that is overlooked I feel in the 40k universe. The Pathfinders look for lost brothers and return them to their brothers. They also track and retrieve lost Chapter relics.

They are basically the ultimate Search and Rescue team. I am using the previously known Iron Hawks as the foundation members of the Pathfinders. These are the actual members of the chapter.

The circumstances surrounding the search and rescue of a lost brother determines the length of stay and necessary evaluation process involved to determine if a lost brother is fit to return to their Chapter.

So, every lost brother must spend some amount of time in the field under the direction of the Pathfinders. Thus their ranks will always be a panoply of different Space Marine Chapters.

Initially the Pathfinders faced opposition and suspicion from many existing chapters in the first 1000 years or so of their existence. The retrieval of many valued heroes and priceless chapter relics quickly launched them into a position of great respect and admiration.

For the Pathfinders also have many a victory banner hung in their haloed halls depicting their valor and success in battle.

From the experience of assessing, training, and serving with so many different Chapters, Pathfinder Space Marines are as adept in various Chapter Tactics as any Chapter of Space Marines (and thus I can field them with whatever chapter tactic floats my boat at the time).

Primarily though, they fight as either White Scars or Iron Hands, as their original leaders were successors of those esteemed founding Chapters.

The Pathfinders are organized similarly to a Tribal Nation. This is a salute to my Irish, Scottish and American Indian heritage.

So, with this I managed to tie myself, my interests, and my modelling motivation into fluff that works for me.

I plan to stretch out the Pathfinder fluff as I go along with the army.

Brother Kanton, a lost Sons of Medusa was lucky enough to be the last model finished when righting this post and is now immortalized in the inaugural Pathfinder post. I will post pics of his brothers soon.
