FTGT Hobby Challenge : List Plans

I like to use Hobby Challenges from various sources to help me aspire to get more models painted.

Currently I am participating in the "Facing the Grey Tide" blog Challenge.

Here is a link to my January Challenge. I think I will up the ante for myself a little bit.

If I can complete any of my monthly challenges I will order one of these babies for myself:

Now, mine will not be filled with anime stuff, only 40k for my gents.

This way I will have a nice place to store my hard work!

Additionally, I have been working through a core 1250 point list that will play to the fluff of my army, be solid on the table top, have some answers for most things, and meet most any Highlander type list construction parameters.

Here is what I have come up with:

  • Captain: Bike, storm shield, Emp Wrath, power fist, artificer armor: 190
  • Scout squad : #10, 4 Bolter, one HB with Hellfire rounds, 4 Shot guns, 1 Sgt with melta bombs and storm bolter, Land Speeder Storm with Heavy Flamer : 178
  • Tac Squad: #10, Drop Pod, Hvy Bolter, melta gun, Sgt with melta bomb and combi flamer : 210
  • Bike Squad: #5, 2 Grav guns, 1 Sgt with melta bomb and combi-grav, multi-melta attack bike : 184
  • Scout Biker Squad: #6, Sgt with melta bomb and combi-grav, 3 grenade launchers : 138
  • Storm Talon with SkyFire Missile Launcher : 125
  • 3 Land Speeder Storms: Heavy Bolter and Cyclone Missile Launchers : 225
1250 Points on the nose:

From there I would like add an ally leaving a solid 600 point block for 1850 games. For the Iron Hawks I would add possibly a command squad, additional HQ, Thunder Fire, etc...but give or take a little tweaking...that is the core I think I will run with for my Iron Hawks.

While the 1250 does not have a large amount of fat to trim...there is some room should I want to squeeze things in...i.e. cut a scout biker or some melta bombs etc. Non-Highlander events I can build out the Scout theme with more scouts and scout bikers etc. Which I still plan on doing.

But like all things, one step at a time.

Iron Hawk Space Marine Captain WIP

Shot of my Iron Hawk Captain to date. Have gotten a bit more work done on him despite the rampant Chaos that is my personal and professional life right now.

FTGT Update : January Challenge Iron Hawks Space Marine Scouts

This is serving as a dual post. First is an update on the FTGT Challenge and also I set up a make shift light box. Additionally, I took a few pics with my older digital camera and a less old camera.

I completed the 3 man scout squad and started my Captain/Chapter Master.

Here are some pics using new light box and older camera:

Here some pics using the less old camera and new light box:

Still working out some kinks with the settings on each camera to get decent pics...still seeing much of the reds washing out. Will likely look for a better back ground...made due with what I had.

Facing the Grey Tide Hobby Challenge

So, I decided to jump in on the FTGT Hobby Challenge. The rules can be found HERE.

Basically you complete about a 1500 point army by assembling and painting a maximum of $75 per month.

I am happy to participate to keep my painting mojo going and give me even a extra bit of motivation.

I am going to use this to get more of my Iron Hawk Space marines up and running.

Since I just getting started on 6 Scout Bikers, seems like a good place to start...only problem is that a 3 man unit of scout bikers is $40 US.

I have to work this out a bit as my Iron Hawks are mostly a
scout army, heavy on the bikes...not sure I can keep it to the budget actually...but will get as close as I can.

So to make this happen for the budget consideration, I guess I will have to paint 3 scout bikers ($40) and 5 bolter scouts ($25) for a total of $65....this will give me $10 to add to next month.

Then just duplicate this next month!

Will take some time plan out the rest of the list as some time goes by...may need to plan on adding some point expensive units that are not too expensive in order to get everything in actually.

Right off we go!

Inquisitorial Henchman Servitors Pics

Decided to paint up a couple servitors today for a little break from working on my Iron Hawks.

These guys will accompany Inquisitor Thadeus from my Soul Drinker themed army.

I can not take credit for the simple, but elegant conversions, the were extras I was lucky enough to receive in a bitz exchange.

These were done pretty quick to table top standard.

These also kicked off my new Painting Points System restart.

Iron Hawks Land Speeder Storm

Here are a few WIP pics of my Iron Hawks Scout Land Speeder Storm.

I still need to finish up the two crew and gun this evening, hopefully.

This model will tote some scouts around in my 1850 Highlander List for the Nov. 22 local tournament I am planning to attend.

Still going to batch complete all the basing nearing the tournament for the sake of time.

I tried my hand at some free hand painting on this and the Inquisitorial Rhino and while not awesome, it is a first and I am pretty happy with it....because I can not draw worth a shite.

Soul Drinkers and Iron Hawk Highlander Tournament List

I am stoked to finally get to play some games again; in fact my first 7th edition games.

I am going to dive right into the deep end and play in a tournament being run locally at Flat Land Games.

The tournament boasts a Highlander army list construction style that I really support.

Inquisitorial Henchmen
You can follow the Flat Land Games link to get all the details,

Basically you can not repeat any non troop army list selections and no duplicate transports, data slates, detachments and forge world are a go if you own the rules.

So, as my hobby ADD goes I am generally working on 1 to countless projects at the same time.
Henchmen Sgt (gave him DC assassin rules)

Currently I am reading the first Soul Drinkers Omnibus and started painting some spare marine models as Soul Drinkers.

I have a squad of 10 tactical and 5 scouts table top ready with a primed drop pod and Libby.

More pics to come on them.

I have also been working on an Inquisitorial attachment and have 13 henchmen table top ready, and spare rhino and an Inquisitor ready for paint.

Culexus Assassin
With that I have a Culexus assassin I painted some time back and have only fielded once who just got some nifty new rules.

Lastly I have been working on my Iron Hawk Clan Space marines.

I have settled on White Scar chapter tactics. They are my scout force that I have been working on.

Their fluff I am filling out but they come from a world with many large dangerous beasts and great sweeping plains surrounded by sky spanning beautiful highlands.

They are meant to combine my heritage...an American mix of mostly Irish with some Cherokee Indian...thus they are volatile, clan based, and hit hard and move fast...more on them later as well.

With all these different elements and the Highlander format her is my current list I am tweaking:
Iron Hawk Scouts

  • Combined Arms Detachment (Primary) (Iron Hawks) (White Scar Chapter Tactics)
    • Captain, bike, teeth of terra, storm shield, artificer armor
    • 5 Bikes, includes sgt, MM Attack Bike, 2 melta guns, melta bomb (troop)
    • 10 Scouts, 8 sniper rifles, 1 Hvy bolter, Sgt with sniper rifle
    • 10 Scouts, 4 shot guns, 1 sgt with melta bomb, combi grav, Land speeder storm with heavy flamer, 5 scouts with bolters
    • Iron Hawk Captain
    • 6 Scout bikers, 3 GL's, Sgt with melta bomb

  • Allied Detachment (Soul Grinders) (Ultra Marine Chapter Tactics)
    • Sarpedon (Chief Librarian Tigerius)
    • 10 Tactical Marines, plasma gun, vet sgt with power sword, plasma pistol, melta bomb
    • 6 Scouts, Telion, 1 sniper rifle, 4 close combat weapons
    • Iron Hawk Scout Clan
    • 6 Scout bikers, 3 GL's, Sgt. with melta bomb
  • Allied Imperial Assassin
    • Culexus
  • Allied Inquisitorial Attachment
    • Ordo Malleous Inquisitor, term armor, psy cannon, psy bolt ammo, Daemon Hammer, 1 psyber skull, Warlord
    • 10 Inquisitorial henchmen, 1 DC assassin (sgt), 1 flamer, 1 melta gun, 7 storm bolters, 1 rhino APC
  • 1850 on the nose
For those who have not read the Soul Grinder Omnibus, in the first two books there are a couple inquisitors with various henchman.

The Soul Grinders do not use vehicles, other than drop pods and some air support/transports.

Sarpedon is a powerful psyker with awesome close combat ability...and eight spider legs. Soul Drinkers tactics are up close and personal, with like no heavy weapons or tanks.

This explains some of my choices in list construction as I try to mesh with the fluff.

BDS

Iron Hawk Librarian and March HPC Challenge Complete

Iron Hawk Librarian completed. The pics did not come out too well...think I needed more light.

The symbols are American Indian in origin. The shoulder pad is "Eye of the Medicine Man or Wise Man" the fairings have symbols for "Speed or Flight" and "War."

All seemed appropriate.

Hobby Progress Challenge Wip: Iron Hawk Librarian (Iron Hand Space Marines)

A WIP shot of my Iron Hawk Librarian with Mind Forge Stave.

I am wondering, though, which color to paint the feathered part of the bike fairing.

I am leaning towards Red as shown, but what about the accent color seen in the Scout Sgt. Imperial Eagle on his chest piece? Any input?

Thanks for the read,

BDS
